H.B. 2341 recommended for reporting by Senate subcommittee

House Bill 2341 , Delegate Amundson’s bill which permits schools to impose out of school suspensions upon students for mere charges based on off-school grounds activities, was recommended for reporting yesterday by the Senate Committee on Education and Health, Public Education subcommittee.

The MAJDC strongly OPPOSES this bill.

If passed, this bill will give more power and authority to the school board in determining how to handle suspensions and alternative education programs for certain students.  A school board may adopt regulations authorizing the principal to impose a short-term suspension upon a student who has been charged with an offense involving intentional injury to another student of the school division pending a decision by the school division superintendent as to whether to require that such student attend an alternative education program.
